CT angiography helps early detection of heart disease

Researchers at institutions such as the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom have found that CT angiography for patients with symptoms of chest pain helps early detection of heart disease. Patients can be treated to significantly reduce the risk of morbidity.

The study tracked more than 4,000 patients with angina, about half of whom received routine examinations and the other half had CT angiography. The patient who underwent CT angiography was found to have a 40% lower risk of heart attack within 5 years.

David Newby, a principal investigator at the University of Edinburgh's Cardiovascular Science Center, points out that CT angiography is relatively simple and ensures that patients receive the right treatment. This is the first study to show that CT angiography can improve the patient's prognosis and thus reduce the risk of heart attack.

Studies have shown that patients receive additional treatment during the first year after undergoing CT angiography, but from a 5-year overall perspective, the number of patients treated in both groups is essentially the same. This suggests that an increased CT angiography does not result in additional ancillary examinations or procedures.

Traditional angiography is an interventional test that involves injecting a developer into a blood vessel. CT angiography is also called non-traumatic angiography in medicine. Doctors only need to observe the vascular condition from outside, which is simpler and safer in operation.
