Japan found that theaflavins in black tea have a disinfectant effect on Norovirus

On October 6, Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan issued a message saying that black tea contains theaflavins (a kind of polyphenols), which has a disinfecting effect on Norovirus. This discovery is the first in the world. Working together with companies in Jinggang County, we are committed to the development of disinfectants derived from plants that are mild to the body.

Theaflavins are pigments produced during the fermentation of tea based on the red color of black tea. The Jinggang County Institute of Environmental Health Sciences put a mixture of viruses and theaflavins similar to human Norovirus into cells of rats, cats and pigs, and found that theaflavins prevent viral cell invasion. The effect of the three viruses used in the experiment was reduced to 1/1000.

Norovirus is highly infectious, and sodium hypochlorite and heating are effective disinfection methods, but there are problems that metals are prone to corrosion and cannot be used on fingers. Shizuoka Prefecture will continue to develop research on safer prevention laws related to new industries.
