Artificially induced versatile stem cells

The University of Hong Kong Medical School announced on the 18th that its research team used artificial skin cells from patients with rare genetic heart disease to produce artificially induced versatile stem cells, which were successfully used as drug tests. Researchers believe that this technology can be applied to other genetic diseases, providing an important opportunity for the future use of precision medicine.

The research team led by Xiao Yuhua, a clinical professor at the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Hong Kong Medical School, has been working on methods for applying stem cells in clinical treatment of various human diseases. In 2010, the research team succeeded in creating artificially induced pluripotent stem cells; they then studied the use of these specific patient cells to understand the possibility of individual rare heart disease.

The study was conducted on cardiac laminopathy, a patient with a genetic disease that usually develops between the ages of 30 and 40, but no drugs can prevent or delay the onset of the disease. The researchers created specific artificially induced versatile stem cells for individual patients that had identical genes to the patient. The researchers converted these cells into cardiomyocytes with pathological features of cardiac laminopathy.

The researchers then tested the drug used to treat another genetic disease and observed the effect of the drug on the pathological features of the cardiomyocytes. The drug was found to restore gene function and reverse pathological changes. However, this drug does not have the same effect on all cells. The researchers point out that only a specific mutation in a particular gene sequence is most sensitive to this treatment, which further cites the need for precision medicine and further advances clinical applications.

The research team believes that this technology can be applied not only to genetic heart disease, but also to other genetic diseases.
