Increased walking can prevent knee osteoarthritis

Release date: 2014-06-25

A recent study showed that walking can reduce the risk of functional limitation due to knee osteoarthritis (OA). The study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was published in Arthritis Care & Research, a journal sponsored by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR). The study concluded that walking ≥ 6000 steps per day may avoid knee OA patients or Those with corresponding risks progress to inconvenience (such as feeling hard when getting up from a chair and climbing stairs).

According to a prevalence study by Lawrence et al. (Arthritis Rheum, 2008), nearly 27 million Americans ≥25 years old were diagnosed with OA. Previous studies have reported that knee OA is the main reason for the limited function of middle-aged and elderly people, making it difficult for patients to walk and climb stairs. In addition, data from the National Health and Nutrition Status Assessment Survey (NHANES III) show that 80% of OA patients have limited mobility and 11% of knee OA patients require personal assistive devices.

Although walking is a common daily physical activity for middle-aged and elderly people, medical evidence suggests that two-thirds of American adults with arthritis walk less than 90 minutes a week. The study sought to clarify whether increasing the amount of walking exercise can lead to better physical function. If the answer is yes, how much do you need to walk each day to minimize the risk of knee OA patients moving into inconvenience?

To this end, the researchers evaluated the daily walking steps of 1788 patients with knee OA or related risks in the multicenter osteoarthritis study. The researchers measured the 7-day walk through the monitor and assessed the subject's physical limitations after 2 years. The latter is defined as a slower walking speed, and the WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index) has a higher body function score than 28/68.

A 1000 step increase in walking steps can reduce the incidence of physical function limitation by 2%-18% after 2 years. The number of walking steps per day is less than 6000 steps is the best dividing line for distinguishing between those who have progressed to physical function. The authors say that walking is a cheap sport, and although the general prevailing view is that the walking goal is 10,000 steps per day, the study reveals that only 6,000 steps a day can be beneficial. Researchers are encouraged to have at least 3,000 steps per day for patients with knee OA or risk, and eventually increase to 6000 steps per day to minimize the risk of difficulty in moving.
