Scientists discover new resistance genes against strong antibiotics

Scientists analyzed DNA sequences from a large number of bacteria in different environments around the world, using new algorithms to find genes associated with a class of bacterial enzymes that give bacteria the ability to fight carbapenems.

 
It is reported that Swedish scientists have discovered a number of new drug resistance genes through large-scale gene sequencing, which can make bacteria have the ability to fight the current most powerful antibiotic, carbapenems.


 
This result will help to design new drugs and enable humans to take the lead in the fight against bacterial resistance. Related papers were published in the journal Microbiome.


 
Researchers at Chalmers Institute of Technology and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden reported that they analyzed DNA sequences from a large number of bacteria in different environments around the world, using new algorithms to find genes associated with a class of bacterial enzymes.


 
This type of bacterial enzyme is called a metal β-lactamase, and its many members can degrade antibiotic molecules and make them inactive. The researchers discovered 76 new genes and tested 21 of them with E. coli, confirming that 18 of them are resistant to carbapenems.
 


The researchers say that the new genes are just the tip of the iceberg. There should be a variety of drug-resistant genes that have not yet been discovered in nature. They will look for genes for other types of antibiotics.
