Scientists propose that AR technology can be used to treat phantom limb pain in amputees

Phantom limb pain is a difficult problem: the limbs of the amputee whose subjective feelings have been cut off still exist. This is an illusion, but it is very tricky. However, at present, a new type of augmented reality therapy is surprisingly effective in reducing phantom pain in patients.

Max Ortiz Catalan of Chalmers University of Technology first proposed AR treatment in 2014 and has just completed the first very promising clinical trial. The team selected 14 amputees with chronic phantom limb pain as subjects. These patients had tried many other treatments, but the condition did not improve.

The patient will wear an EMG sensor that detects muscle signals that have been used to control missing limbs. By tracking and analyzing these signals, and integrating the patient with the virtual environment - in that virtual image, the patient's limbs are intact, and the patient can immersively open his hand or twist his wrist.

Once the calibration is complete, the virtual limb is superimposed on the live network image of the patient's amputation site. The patient can think about the action and the virtual limb will execute. The treatment is performed every half month, and during up to 12 treatments, the patient is required to use virtual limbs for various operations, such as using sensors to control cars in racing games.

Surprisingly, at the end of the 12 treatments, the patient's pain was reduced by about half, and the patient's daily life began to return to normal, and sleep improved. Four patients reduced the dose of analgesics, two of which even reduced the dose by 81%. After six months, the patient's condition is still improving, which means that AR therapy has a sustained therapeutic effect.
