Global Pacific salmon is only half healthy

Global Pacific salmon is only half healthy According to the first edition of "Overview of Sustainable Fisheries Development" published by the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), only half of the wild Pacific salmon population in the world is healthy. The five major commercial varieties mentioned are Wangxi (Dalang Da Ma), Qiu Xin, Jubilee, Daxi Maha, and Da Maha. The data is derived from the SFP online fishery information resource FishSource.com.

51% of the global supply of wild Pacific salmon is from well-developed fisheries (mostly in Alaska), and 49% comes from some fisheries that need to be improved. There are good, medium, and poor fisheries in each salmon production area (Alaska, British Columbia, Russia, Japan, and the US Pacific Northwest coast).

In 2013, only 7% of the wild salmon farms are currently certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and 39% are being evaluated. The revaluation of the Alaskan fish farm was delayed due to delays and no certification was completed until 2014.

The top line results report is as follows:

1 The total number of Pacific salmon in the analysis was excellent (21%) (A). Among them, 84% silver carp, 49% red salmon, 21% salmon, 16% princess and 4% Autumn

2 30% of the total (B) status is good, but the management response or hatching influence needs to be improved - 65% of the king owl, 40% of the red salmon, 36% of the salmon, 16% of the silver鲑 16 and 16% 秋鲑;

3 49% of the total (Category C) has problems with management, population status, or hatching impacts that need to be greatly improved - 80% of the fall, 43% of the salmon, 18% of the kingfish, 11% of the red horse Hail

4 At Alaskan salmon farms, 55% of the catch was rated A, 19% was B, and 26% was C;

5 At the Russian salmon farm, 0.07% of the catch was rated A, 47% was B, and 53% was C;

6 In the British Columbia salmon farm, 0.02% of the catch was rated A, 96% B, and 3% C;

7 In the eel farm in Japan's exclusive economic zone, Akiba was rated as Category C.

The "Overview" suggests that commercial buyers and managers of wild Pacific salmon need urgently to take the following actions:

Suspension of the North Pacific hatchery expansion plan until the risk of hatching to wild populations is determined, and preventive management strategies are added; measures are taken to combat illegal fishing and illegal fish trade inside and outside Russia; and data transparency is improved.
