According to a new study in Canada, scientists have developed a "smart scaffold" that monitors subtle changes in blood flow through the arteries, identifies early symptoms of arterial stenosis, and makes early diagnosis and treatment possible.
To prevent arterial embolism and prevent heart disease, some patients need to be implanted. Statistics show that at least one in three of these patients will have arterial stenosis again (secondary stenosis due to plaque formation or scarring), leading to a significant increase in the risk of complications. Professor Jianyi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of British Columbia in Canada, improved the functionality of the old stent as a miniature antenna and added a special mini-sensor to continuously track blood flow. Relevant data can be sent wirelessly to an external reading device to provide and continuously update dynamic information about the arterial blood flow status in real time. The material used to make the "smart bracket" is medical grade stainless steel, and its shape is similar to that of a normal bracket. Researchers have successfully completed prototype and pig model testing of new stents. They said that the stent can be placed into the patient through current implantation techniques.
Professor Gao Yijian said that replacing the common stent with a "smart bracket" can help doctors to discover the risk of arterial stenosis and more accurately detect the health of the blood vessels. Once problems are found, they can be treated promptly.
