According to a medical paper published by the British journal Nature Communications on the 19th, a team of European scientists reported that a natural compound has been identified to protect yeast, worms and human cultured cells, helping to delay aging. This is another important discovery of humans in the development of anti-aging drug therapy.

Aging can cause specific changes in cells, and most methods known to extend lifespan activate cell autophagy. Autophagy is a recycling mechanism that can remove and degrade damaged proteins and organelles in cells, and generate new molecules for synthesis. Autophagy dysfunction causes toxic or damaged molecules to accumulate in cells, leading to age-related lesions, such as neurodegenerative diseases.

This time, Frank Mehto, a scientist at the University of Graz in Austria, and his colleagues screened flavonoids with anti-aging effects in yeast cells, a class of plant-derived molecules known to promote cell health. The team found that the naturally occurring 4,4'-dimethoxychalcone (DMC) in a plant leaf called "Tomorrow Leaf" not only prolongs the lifespan of yeast, worms and fruit flies, but also reduces Age-related cell decline in human cultured cells. DMC protects mouse heart cells from long-term myocardial ischemia (reduced cardiac blood flow) and reduces tissue death.

The researchers also found that DMC's protective efficacy requires the activation of autophagy, a systemic change in metabolism that is conserved across all species.

This observation also confirms that autophagy has a conserved effect on cell protection and longevity, an advancement in the development of anti-aging drug therapies. However, whether the therapy can prevent age-related decline in the human body still needs further study.
