Gene sequencing company Shunyuan Gene was awarded a $20 million Series A financing
According to industry sources, recently, Singlera Genomics, a genetic testing company based in Zhangjiang, Shanghai, received a $20 million Series A financing. The round of financing was led by Lilly Asia Fund, and Songhe Capital and Chende Capital jointly invested. The company plans to use this financing to help the development and commercialization of non-invasive gene sequencing for cancer and other genetic diseases, and to promote the release of new product lines in cancer diagnosis and personalized medicine .
Suiyuan gene was jointly established by Professor Gao Yuan (Johns Hopkins University), Professor Zhang Wei (University of California, San Diego) and other founders CEO Zhang Jiangli, COO Liu Qiang and CTO Liu Rui.
Co-founders Gao Yuan and Zhang Wei are well-known figures in the industry. Gao Yuan is currently the chairman of the company. He is an associate professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, founder and president of Med Data Quest, Inc. in the United States. In 2008, he co-authored with Professor Dennis Lo of the Chinese University of Hong Kong on PNAS. The famous NIPT technology breakthrough paper, and thus laid the foundation for DNA non-invasive prenatal testing technology, this technology was named one of the top ten medical breakthroughs in 2008 by Time magazine. In 2009, he and Zhang Wei jointly developed the first large-scale DNA methylation targeted sequencing technology. In 2012, in collaboration with Professor George Church and Scriram Kosuri, a large-scale DNA synthesis technology for synthetic biology was used to invent a DNA information archiving system that does not require the use of cells.
Zhang Wei is a scientific advisor to the company. He is a professor of bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego. In 2006, he was the first to achieve single-cell whole genome sequencing. In 2011, he published an article on the presence of genomic instability in induced stem cells (iPS) in Nature. It became the top ten articles cited in all the articles published in the world that year. In 2013, the newly developed Microwell Array Single Cell Sequencing Technology (MIDAS) not only became the cover article of Nature Biotechnology, but also won the rising star of the outstanding young researchers of Genome Technology Magazine.
