New Augmented Reality App helps Parkinson's patients improve their walking posture
According to foreign media reports, students from Rice University's bioengineering program have developed a smartphone app that helps patients with Parkinson's disease improve their walking gait.
These patients are experiencing a common freezing phenomenon in which the leg movements are randomly paused, in contrast to the direction in which the brain indicates that they are moving. According to previous research, regular, repetitive sounds and visual cues can help patients achieve a more regular pace, so Rice University students decided to try to optimize this mechanism through advanced technology.
The app uses augmented reality (AR) to build objects near the floor visible through the phone. Users through these virtual objects that appear regularly at their feet will help achieve a more natural walking style. It is also equipped with an audio tone that can be activated to help the user walk on the rhythm.
