Researching action video games helps to perceive learning

One study found that playing action video games may be associated with increased ability to learn certain new tasks. Some studies have shown that individuals who play fast, action-filled video games show improvements in perception, attention, and cognitive performance. However, the mechanisms behind such improvements are largely unknown.
Daphne Bavelier and colleagues used neuromodeling to conduct a series of behavioral experiments on groups of 10 to 14 people to determine the nature of these mechanisms. The authors observed that players with experience in playing video games (AVGPs) performed better in pattern-distinguishing tasks than those who did not play motion-based video games (NAVGs).
Using neural modeling, the authors determined that players with experience in action-based video games (AVGPs) used advanced perceptual templates, which were models of the external world built by the brain using perceptual experience. In another experiment, players who participated in the 50-hour action video game training without the experience of playing video games (NAVGs) got better performance than those who participated in the pattern before training, and were better than untrained. A control group is better, which suggests a link between playing action video games and improving the development of perceptual templates. According to the authors, improvements in the regularity of the environment and the learning of structures may serve as a core mechanism for action-based video games to influence perception, attention, and cognitive performance.
