The world's largest X-ray laser is being used in Germany to help develop new drugs

Release date: 2017-09-05

The world's largest X-ray laser, the European XFEL (European X-ray free electron laser), was officially put into use in the Hamburg metropolitan area on September 1. A total of 11 European countries participated in the development of this laser with a cost of 1.22 billion euros.

According to reports, the European XFEL is the world's largest laser facility: it can emit up to 27,000 pulses per second, which is one billion times brighter than conventional synchrotron sources. The successful development of lasers has opened up a whole new field of research that will help break through the boundaries of current scientific knowledge. Research teams from around the world can not only solve the mystery of virus and cellular atomic structure, but also make three-dimensional images in nanoparticles, record chemical reactions and observe the reaction process inside the particles. The results of the above studies contribute to the development of new drugs and new materials.

German Federal Minister of Research Johanna Wanka, Hamburg's First Mayor Olaf Waltz, Shihe State Department of Science Carlin Prien, Russian Presidential Advisor Andre Fulsenke, France Representatives of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Frederick Widell, and other representatives attended the opening ceremony of the day and expressed their condolences to the first batch of foreign researchers. The researchers have already invested in the first trial that will begin in mid-September.

The European XFEL Institute (European X-ray Free Electron Laser) is a not-for-profit research organization that works closely with the Hamburg Research Center DESY and other international agencies. The institute has more than 300 employees. The construction and post-commissioning of the European XFEL laser cost 1.22 billion euros. The European X-ray free electron laser is 3.4 km long and travels directly through the city of Hamburg to Schleswig-Holstein. A total of 11 countries are currently involved in the construction of the project, which are Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Spain and Hungary. The UK is applying to join the research project.
