The Chinese University of Hong Kong announced on the 23rd that the research team found that high-squalene epoxidase (SQLE) induced non-alcoholic fatty liver and related liver cancer; and found that terbinafine can effectively inhibit non-alcoholic fatty liver induced Liver cancer cells grow.
According to the Hong Kong University of China, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is an important cause of liver cancer, but the medical community is not aware of the mechanism and lack of effective treatment and prevention drugs. About 30% of adults in Hong Kong currently have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
The Hong Kong-China University research team ranked 18 tumor tissues with non-alcoholic fatty liver-induced liver cancer and their normal liver tissues, and found that SQLE was significantly higher in patients with such liver cancer; while patients with high SQLE liver cancer had shorter survival.
SQLE is the key enzyme for cholesterol synthesis in the human body. The research team used genetic engineering to construct experimental mouse models with high SQLE liver cells. The results showed that the incidence of liver cancer in experimental mice with SQLE gene transformation was significantly improved, which proved that SQLE is a carcinogenic factor induced by non-alcoholic fatty liver.
The researchers also found that anti-fungal drugs, known as terbinafine, can inhibit the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver-induced liver cancer, providing a new direction for the treatment of this type of liver cancer.
Yu Jun, a professor of Department of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Hong Kong, who led the study, said that SQLE plays a key role in non-alcoholic fatty liver-induced liver cancer. They will continue to study terbinafine treatment and prevention of such liver cancer. The utility of this is expected to translate the research results into clinical applications in the future.
The research results were published on April 18th in the internationally renowned medical journal Science Translational Medicine.
