A recent development in the field of medical complex human organ bioengineering has enabled scientists to successfully develop organs similar to the kidneys in the laboratory.
The research report was published in the journal Nature on the 7th. The research team conducted a series of experiments to transform a human skin cell into a structure similar to the kidney. The structure covers a range of 5 mm. This structure consists of many Different cell compositions and have exhibited the same partial anatomical features as real organs.
According to Melissa Little, a developmental biologist at the Murdoch Children's Institute in Melbourne, Australia, the structure developed in the laboratory is equivalent to the human kidney during the first trimester. The institute was founded by the mother of News Corp.'s CEO, media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, and in 2011 the Murdoch family provided $10 million in funding for the Institute.
It is understood that the organs currently cultivated in the laboratory are far away from the intact functional kidneys that can be transplanted into the human body, but the complexity of this artificial organ is sufficient for drug testing.
Scientists are currently relying on animal experiments to determine whether a new compound is nephrotoxic, but this method is not accurate enough. A pharmaceutical company may spend millions of dollars on a drug, but when it began to conduct human experiments, it suddenly found that the drug is actually harmful to the kidney and must be abandoned. According to reports, nephrotoxicity is one of the main reasons why many new drugs can not be listed.
Jamie Davis, a tissue engineering expert at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, believes that in the future, pharmaceutical companies will be able to use the kidney tissue cultivated in this laboratory to detect new drugs, without relying on animal experiments that are unstable.
