The lungs are the main inlet for air pollutants into the body. If too much air pollutants are inhaled, it can cause symptoms of the disease. A recent study showed that certain contaminants (such as phthalates) can also enter the body through the skin. This effect is called dermal absorption, and the contaminants absorbed in this way can even reach the levels of pollutants inhaled by the lungs.
Phthalates can be used as plasticizers and added to plastics to increase the flexibility of the plastic. Some studies have shown that these plasticizers can cause long-term exposure to the human body at a certain concentration, which can cause asthma and cancer.
In this latest study, the researchers tested six participants who exposed these participants to air pollution containing the chemicals DEP and DnBP. DEP can be used as a solvent for some personal care products, such as moisturizers, while DnBP can be used as a plasticizer, such as nail polish.
The researchers tested the participants' urine samples. The results were different from previous studies. The earlier studies showed that the skin can act as a barrier against air pollution, and the skin absorbs pollutants very slowly, which can greatly reduce air pollution. The potential damage that the object may cause to the body, and this study suggests that this may not be the case.
This study suggests that inhalation of air or absorption of air pollutants through the skin is an important way for toxic chemicals to enter the bloodstream. The results of the study are published in the International Academic Journal Environmental Health Perspective.
