According to Japanese media reports, more than 20 Japanese companies and research institutes such as Japan's Toyota, NEC and the Japanese Institute of Physical Chemistry will jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI) for medical and manufacturing industries in the form of industry-university cooperation. All parties will establish research bases in Tokyo to develop common basic technologies that can be used by various organizations in various scenes.
According to the report, in the application of artificial intelligence, Google and other companies in the United States have invested hundreds of billions of yen and are expanding into new markets. Japan will also use extensive cooperation to enhance its technical strength to solve problems such as aging and inefficient production.
The Innovation and Intelligence Integration Research Center of the Japan Institute of Physical Chemistry will open an artificial intelligence research base near Tokyo Station on September 1. Researchers from Toyota, NEC, Sony Computer Science Institute (Sony CSL), NTT, and artificial intelligence development startup Preferred Networks will also be stationed at the research base.
The cooperation period is 10 years. First, in the budgetary requirements for the 2017 government budget of Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Institute of Management Chemistry is expected to include funds related to the scale of 10 billion yen. In addition, companies are expected to bear the cost of hundreds of millions of yen.
Nowadays mainstream artificial intelligence needs to be based on huge data, and the above team will develop the basic technology that, although limited in data, can find the best answer that humans cannot notice according to its purpose.
Japan will use these technologies to develop “problem-solving artificial intelligence†by various agencies to strengthen manufacturing, improve medical efficiency, and manage old infrastructure.
Toyota and NEC will collaborate with the Institute of Physical Chemistry in the areas of product manufacturing and infrastructure management.
The artificial intelligence used in the first line of product manufacturing can detect the precursors of faults that are unpredictable to skilled workers by using the sensor data installed on the various equipments of the factory. The production line will also completely eliminate waste and increase the operating rate of the plant.
The Sony Computer Science Institute will develop a system that can advise on treatments that doctors have not noticed. The patient's symptoms will be analyzed in detail using the electronic medical record, and a treatment method suitable for each person will be proposed to suppress an increase in medical expenses.
In the future, we will join hands with the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, and so on, the participating institutions will continue to increase. The research results will gradually be put into practical use in the first line after two to three years.
